How Do I Determine Chair Height?

Step 1: Measure the Height of the Table or Bar

Bars, countertops, and tables all vary slightly by size. Some of them have an apron (support piece of wood under the lip of the table). Measure from the bottom of the apron to the floor.

Step 2: Determine Ideal Chair Height

Subtract 12 inches from that distance and you will have the ideal height for your chair or stool. This 12-inch measurement can be adjusted by an inch or so either direction, depending upon the specifications of the chair.

Step 3: Choose Chair Style

Dining room chairs and bar stools are available in a wide range of styles. Think about the style of the room they will be used in and the style of the table itself.  The chairs should reflect that same style, even if you choose to make them a contrasting color.
