DIY Project: Decorating with Artificial Plants

Do you have a rental property that you would like to spruce up without spending a lot of money? Well that is exactly the case for my parents. During a Spring Break visit this week to my parent’s house, my mother was lamenting about how ugly the light post was on her pool deck. Because they are renting their property they did not want to do any major work to pull out the existing light post so instead, I suggested that we make it more beautiful with a combination of real plants and artificial plants.

My mom started by placing some potted plants and a skeleton of a saguaro cactus at the base of the light post. We were still left with an ugly black pole topped with a plain ball shade. My solution was a combination of artificial hanging azalea plants and azalea bushes. Two of each, in fact. I used a little bit of black electrical tape to secure the stems of these artificial flowers to the top of the light post.

Two hanging plants are placed on the right and left side of the post while the azalea bushes are placed more toward the center to fill everything out a bit. Not only does the finished product look beautiful, but because these are artificial outdoor plants, they will not fade in the sunlight. An added benefit is that unlike natural plants, these leaves and flowers won’t end up floating in their pool.

When they are finally ready to leave this property, they can simply take the flowers back down and use them again at their next place, which is very likely since my parents have a tendency to move every 5 years or so. What will this inspire you to spruce up using artificial plants such as azaleas?
