DIY Silk Flowers

Yesterday, we made a simple jute-wrapped wreath. Today, it is time to turn that basic wreath and make it shine with the addition of DIY silk flowers. These hand-sewn flowers are so easy to make that anyone can do it. This tutorial will show you how. I like to use these flowers in a variety of ways so I may be returning to them in future projects. Go ahead and print out this tutorial and keep it handy for future projects as well.DIY Silk Flowers

Step 1:
Cut out six small circles. The bigger you make the circles, the bigger the finished flower will be. The smaller circles in this tutorial are about two inches in diameter and the larger ones displayed on the wreath are just shy of three inches in diameter.

Step 2:
Fold a circle in half and then in half again. Make a stitch through the corner to secure the four layers of fabric together. Repeat this process again, sliding the second triangle right up next to the first triangle. Repeat until all six triangles have been sewn together.

Step 3:
Pull the edge of the first triangle next to the edge of the sixth triangle and stitch them together. Tie off your thread and clip off the excess thread. You should now have a flat bottom to your flower.

Step 4:
Flip over your flower and fan out the petals. Repeat this process until you have as many flowers as you need for your wreath. Glue them onto the jute-wrapped wreath we made yesterday.

Variation:
This is a great way to use up scrap fabrics. If you do not have silk lying around you can use quilting cotton, polyester rayon blends, or any other fabric that resists fraying. The silk in this tutorial does fray a bit but I like the texture that adds to the finished wreath.
