Using Artificial Dahlias to Decorate for A Party

If you love celebrating Cinco de Mayo with your family and friends, go ahead and give them a party they will remember. Start by creating beautiful centerpieces for your table. If you are using a lot of small tables, try placing a single artificial dahlia in a clear vase in the center of each table. The low height will keep conversation flowing while the flower will pay tribute to the special day. If you have a longer table, try purchasing a trio of these festive artificial flowers and place them a foot apart from one another.

Complete your decorations with festive linens, plates and cups in green, white and red. These are the colors of the Mexican flag and would add a special touch to your decorations.

Growing Dahlias at Home

If you love these big, colorful blooms and you happen to live in a hot climate, you can always plant them in your own flowerbeds. If you are trying to grow them at home, the first thing you need to do is choose a site with rich soil that receives a lot of direct sunlight. Shady spots simply won’t work for these Mexican beauties. Dahlias are a great choice for planters or window boxes.

With your site located, go ahead and plant dahlia tubers 18 to 24 inches apart. The tubers should be planted 3 to 6 inches deep. Resist the urge to water them right away. Too much water right off the bat could cause the tuber to rot and the plant won’t grow properly. If your soil is not rich enough on it’s own, try using some nitrogen fertilizer. If you follow these steps, you should see shoots in 2 to 4 weeks.
