How to Select an Artificial Centerpiece

Centerpieces are a great finishing touch to a table. You can use them to set a theme, or add an elegant touch to a dinner part. Using an artificial plant or arrangement as a centerpiece is a cost effective way of setting a mood. There are several considerations when selecting an artificial arrangement.

Shape of Table
The centerpiece is the focal point of the table. If you are setting a round table, one round arrangement in the center is adequate. For a long table with seating on both sides, try a rectangular or oblong arrangement or line several small round arrangements in the center of the table. When purchasing a centerpiece for a buffet table that is placed against a wall, place the arrangement in the middle back of the table.

Determining Size
When selecting your centerpiece, consider the size of the table. A large centerpiece is needed for a large table, but would overwhelm a small table. According to the Cooperative Extension Service of the University of Kentucky, a centerpiece is usually not more than one-third the length of the table. This formula works for round, oval, and rectangular tables.

Determining Height
The height of your centerpiece is determined by its location. When placing an artificial centerpiece on a dining table, the arrangement should not go above eye level. After placing your centerpiece on the table, sit and make sure you will be able to see the other guests over the arrangement. If you are placing an arrangement on a coffee or end table, make sure the height of the arrangement doesn’t interfere with television viewing, or conversing with guests. With careful consideration of placement and purpose, your artificial centerpiece will provide years of enjoyment.
