The art of shaping a bonsai was can be traced all the way back to ancient China, but the practice was adapted and made famous by the Japanese. Did you know that they are not actually mini trees? They grow from the same seeds as their full-size brethren, but are cultivated to stay small, and grow within the confines of a planter. They are a novelty in the western world, which is one of the reasons they make such popular decorations.
The majority of our line are small enough for display on a table, desk, shelf or bookcase. They range from 8.5 inches to six feet tall, however, there are more options from which to choose if you prefer a larger display. Perhaps you'd like to wow your guests when they walk in the door? It's the perfect way to set a calm tone in the moment your guests arrive. You'll find countless places to use the smaller versions, too. Look around for small spaces that need filling with a burst of color like your hallway console table or the guest bathroom.
All of our preserved tree options feature natural trunks, as well as realistic branches and needles. But there are several different species to choose from, each with its own unique look. Let's review the different types available to you before you begin browsing.
The Monterey tree is probably the most common type of we carry in our line and it's likely what you picture when you think of a miniature trees. It features bushy foliage over branchless trunks. If they were full-size, the canopy would cast a great deal of shade with its umbrella shaping.
The artificial Cedar grows slightly more vertically than the tiered Monterey. It features scrubby greenery of a lighter green hue, which gives a soft and lush appearance. The Tea Leaf features branches with tiny leaves which will remind you of hedges in a front yard or garden. This dainty version is relatively squat, with low-growing branches blanketed in greenery. Ficus are leafy designs and are defined by the vines that hang from their branches. A twisting trunk gives way to thick foliage-covered branches, for a look that has an almost swampy quality to it. The Kage tree resembles the Monterey, though the branches grow more vertically. Flat, thick foliage canopies grow widely, shading the trunk below.
Small variations can make a big difference, so be sure to closely survey these species and decide which will look best in the room you are decorating. Note that we offer single, double, and triple trunk option, which vary in fullness and height quite a bit. You'll also notice that we elevate our designs with moss and stones to the base which can enhance its appearance, too.
Speaking of the base of your tree, think about how you will display it. Your item might already be potted in a decorative container. For those that come in non-decorative plastic pots, we suggest you visit our planters’ page. Check the measurements of the base to find one that fits. Or, look around your home; you might find something that works perfectly!
