Halloween Salt Dough Ornaments

Halloween is right around the corner. Get your kids excited for the holiday by taking an afternoon to make Halloween salt dough ornaments with them. These adorable ornaments look beautiful hanging on a black halloween tree with orange lights but are also ideal strung from a ribbon and hung as a garland. I made pumpkins with my kiddos but you could make leaves, bats, ghosts, frankensteins, or any other ghoulish creature.

Supply List

  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Cookie Cutters
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Silver Wire
  • Thin Ribbon

Step 1:
Mix your dough. You are going to mix two parts flour, one part salt, and one part water. To make these fun pumpkins, I used two cups of flour, one cup of salt, and one cup of water. Mix all your ingredients by hand until they are well incorporated. Once you have kneaded your dough until the mixture s nice and smooth, go ahead and flour your counter and rolling pin, rolling out the dough until it is about half an inch thick.

Step 2:
Cut out your ornaments with a cookie cutter, flouring the edges of the cookie cutter as necessary. Re-roll your dough until you have cut out as many pumpkins as possible. Cut a two and half inch length of wire, fold it around a thin pen dowel, and insert them into the top of each pumpkin.

Step 3:
Transfer your pumpkins to a cookie sheet and bake them at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours or until they are completely dry.

Step 4:
Once the pumpkins are nice and cool, paint each one with acrylic paints. Give each of your pumpkins a unique face and allow them to dry completely. Hang them from a length of ribbon and your custom ornaments are ready to decorate your home with.
