DIY Project: Fitted Tablecloth

As an avid sewer, I am always looking for inexpensive projects that can improve the look of my home. This beautiful fitted tablecloth fits that bill to a tee. I took some leftover home decorator fabric that I used for my living room valances and transformed it into a tablecloth that won’t shift around on us while we eat. This is a fantastic project for beginner sewers because it only involves straight lines and simple hemming techniques.

Supplies:

  • Fabric of Your Choice (Enough yardage to cover your table and allow for overhang)
  • Thread
  • Bobbin
  • Sewing Scissors
  • Hemming Ruler
  • Straight Pins

Step 1

Your first step is to measure both the length and width of your table. Go ahead and write these measurements on a piece of scrap paper. Next, determine how much overhang you would like to have on each side of your tablecloth. The one depicted here has 3 1/2 inches of overhang on each side. Add to both your length and width measurements two times the amount of overhang you would like.

I added 7 inches to both my width and height of my table top. You will also need an additional 1 1/2 inches on all sides for hemming. To offer an example, my tabletop measured 3′ x 5′. After adding the 7 inches for overhang and the three inch for hemming, the final measurements of my fabric were 5’10” by 7’10”.

Step 2

Cut your fabric to the desired measurements and go ahead and iron out any wrinkles so that the fabric may have. Turn the fabric so that it is wrong side up and fold down a half inch of the fabric on the longest sides. Iron down the first half inch. Now turn up an additional inch on the long sides and iron it down. Go ahead and stitch the hem of these two sides.

Step 3

Repeat step two on the two short sides of the tablecloth.

Step 4

Once all four sides of the tablecloth are hemmed, go ahead and place the tablecloth on the table, wrong side up. Go ahead and pin the bottom of the hem together at the corner, straight down from the corner of your table. Add a vertical pin from the corner of the table downward. Repeat this step on all four corners. Run a straight stitch from the vertical pin down to the hem on all four corners.

Step 5

Turn your tablecloth right side out and place it on the table. I finished this whole sewing project in just one hour and absolutely love the finished result. Follow these easy instructions to make your own fitted tablecloth.
